By committing to working with students on a monthly basis throughout their semester or year-long math course, I get to know them as math students and they get to know me as a math teacher. In my classroom teaching career, I have found this relationship-building to be the most important aspect of a successful student/teacher partnership.
As an endurance athlete, I like to compare this model to that of online endurance coaching. It is more than just a one-time call for training advice. Instead, it involves a partnership in which the coach gets to know the athlete and the athlete gets to know the coach so that a one-of-a-kind, personalized plan for the athlete’s success can be made and constantly adjusted as the athlete improves, faces setbacks, and navigates other challenges in life. It is almost always built on a monthly commitment over at least a year that includes both synchronous and asynchronous support through phone calls and an effective online platform for training analysis.
I aim to apply this type of model to supporting math students in a more comprehensive way than just hiring a tutor for a session without any greater context. We will work together through real-time video lessons, while also making use of Google Classroom for additional support throughout each week. Even if you choose to schedule a single session with me instead of making a monthly commitment, you will be asked to fill out a pre-session questionnaire and complete a brief custom pre-session assessment to provide me with some context for how to make an individualized plan for the session.
I work with a limited number of students so that I can spend time throughout the week creating individualized plans and providing adequate support for each student.
My goal is not just to help students finish a homework assignment or study for an upcoming exam. I want to support them in learning how to go far as an overall math student. Every student has the ability to succeed in a math course by learning the language of mathematics, finding the best approach for them to understand the concepts, and practicing applying those concepts to specific problems.
My name is Will Murray. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and statistics as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Miami University, and a Master of Science degree in mathematics from Western Washington University. I have four years of classroom experience teaching high school courses in Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus (including AP Calculus AB), and Linear Algebra at Blair Academy, a 4-year college preparatory boarding school in New Jersey. I developed a unique advanced high school curriculum for both Differential Calculus and Linear Algebra. I also taught undergraduate college courses, both in person and online, in Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus for two years as a graduate student at Western Washington University. I have been recognized with multiple awards for my teaching at both the college and high school level. I have tutored high school students through in-person weekly evening sessions for the past four years as a classroom teacher, and I also tutored high school students during my time as a graduate student. I have learned how to work with multiple students while providing each one with the individual attention and flexible teaching style that they need.
My approach as a teacher is centered around helping students achieve strong conceptual understanding, which they can then apply to specific problems. I accomplish this by explaining concepts in multiple ways, drawing pictures, teaching students the language of mathematics, and clearly demonstrating how concepts show up in different types of problems. I shy away from simply giving students step-by-step templates or algorithms for solving specific problems. Instead, I want them to understand why given problem-solving methods work so that they can confidently determine a logical and efficient strategy for solving any problem they may encounter.
In addition to my roles as a math teacher, I have worked as an assistant and head coach for high school baseball, track & field, and basketball programs.
Outside of my work as a teacher, I am a competitive ultra endurance athlete with top finishes in some of the most renowned trail running races in the US. I understand what it takes to persevere and go far as an athlete, which I believe helps me inspire and teach students to go far in their endeavors both inside and outside of the classroom.
